CITYarts' Pre-Holiday Shopping Kick-Off

CITYarts' online End of Summer Health, Beauty, and Art Auction is now open. The auction will run from October 26, 2012 to November 26th, 2012.

Proceeds support CITYarts' mural project at P.S. 328, where CITYarts is bringing together students from P.S. 328 with professional artist Pansum Cheng to create a large scale outdoor mural at P.S. 328, located at 330 Alabama Avenue in East New York, Brooklyn. The mural, entitled “Red Road to Mars” is sponsored in part by NASA and Benjamin Moore paints and represents the students’ dreams for a better future.

The mural will cover the length of a 200 foot outdoor wall on the P.S. 328 school grounds.  The Mural Project is a partnership between CITYArts, P.S. 328, and the P.S. 328 after-school center, operated by Good Shepherd Services, a leading youth development, education, and family service agency in New York City.

Students from the after-school program at P.S. 328, neighborhood youth and groups of volunteers from a range of corporate and civic organizations are working under the direction of artist Pansum Cheng and CITYarts staff to create the design and paint the mural. After two months of workshops which combines elements of science and art education students drew their ideas for the mural and how to express it on the wall.  This is a two-year project which commenced in April, 2012. A ribbon cutting ceremony, coinciding with the beginning of the school year in September, 2012, will celebrate progress made to date and honor the participants for learning art skills, teamwork, leadership and contributing to the revitalization of their neighborhood with meaningful community service. As a part of NASA’s science education component, students visited the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum to see the NASA shuttle Enterprise and created a robotic hand in a creative science workshop.
