CAN-DO, Citizens for Affordable Housing in Newton Development Organization, is a community-based non-profit developer that was started in 1994. Our mission is to create affordable housing units for individuals and families with low and moderate incomes.
In its 15 years of existence, CAN-DO through its transitional housing units has provided environmentally safe, comfortable and affordable housing for 43 homeless families including 79 children. These families receive additional supportive services ranging from counseling, child care, after school care and job-training via our partner organizations.
In addition, we’ve provided 12 families, including 25 children with affordable permanent rental housing. CAN-DO has extended its housing continuum from “rent to own” by enabling eight moderate income families to become homeowners.
The most glaring illustration of the success of affordable housing can be measured in the drastic improvement in the lives of the children. A 12 yr old CAN-DO resident proudly states, “Mom is a lot happier now; she has less problems and gets to spend more time with us!” She goes on to boast, “I’m getting good grades, doing my homework and staying out of trouble. My teachers are helping me and I go to the Boys & Girls Club after school”. Even at her young age, she recognizes the impact of living in a supportive community.
