Item Description
Invite up to three friends for a glimpse into the past with maritime historian and archaeologist Edward Von der Porten to learn more about Point Reyes long seafaring history. Edward will guide you and your guests along Drakes Beach to the cove identified as the harbor of Nova Albion, or New England, where Francis Drake and his crew from the Golden Hind landed in 1579 and claimed the land for England's Queen Elizabeth.
Although Drake's landing site was long debated, the location is now well established in scholarly circles. Hear from our host scholar about the search for the evidence that identified Drakes Bay as Drake's haven. Climb a hill for a grand view of the cove and Drakes Estero, the inner waterways where Drake and his men spent five weeks careening the Golden Hind, repairing her leaking hull, re-provisioning with fresh water and meat, and reloading her cargo of captured Spanish silver bars before sailing into the Pacific to complete the circumnavigation of the globe.
Your journey ends with a locally-sourced dinner for four prepared by Station House Cafe in Point Reyes Station. A former train depot, this popular destination restaurant boasts a refreshing menu of California coastal cuisine and the finest ingredients from local purveyors to create a savory menu of classic comfort dishes with the Bay Area’s signature fresh touch.
