Item Description
Gershwin's Porgy and Bess, has always been one of my favorite pieces of American music. As I pondered ways to celebrate and pay tribute to this American original, on the surface of a wooden violin, I knew I wanted to evoke the essence of Gershwin's and Haywood's lives---MUSIC. I also wanted to give my violin a thirties feel, a tonal quality, and asimplicity reflecting Catfish Row. How thrilled I was, when I came acrosssome original 1935 Porgy and Bess sheet music, yellowed with age. I decoupaged this onto my violin, being careful to let titles and words be visible to the viewer. Over the surface, I drew , in ink, two scenes from the story---an embrace between Porgy and Bess, and a strutting Sportin Life on the back. The paper bow, also made of sheet music, was cut to reveal Gershwin as publisher in the year 1935. I hope this adds to the knowlrdge and enjoyment of the owner of this art violin.
