Item Description
This compelling 16" x 20" acrylic painting was created by Jean-Baptiste Markendy, a Haitian youth who takes part in an art program offered by the Association for the Promotion of Integral Family Healthcare (APROSIFA), a free health clinic and UUSC partner in Port-au-Prince.
Even before the earthquake, APROSIFA was providing young people with a safe space and engaging arts activities to help keep them from the harm of gang violence. Following the earthquake, the arts program offered a powerful way for youth to process the trauma they experienced. Today, there are nearly 70 kids who come for an average of two hours a day to work on their art. APROSIFA provides the supplies, the space, and the training, and the students can sell what they make and keep the profits.
