Louise Arner Boyd, a California native, was one of the first female Arctic Explorers!  She received the Chevalier Cross of the Order of Saint Olav from the Norwegian Government, was recognized by the National Geographic Society, served in the United States military, and in 1955 was the first woman to fly over the North Pole.
