"The charcoal I received for this project, helped to find my vision for this piece. I burned paper and used it and the ash for the ground to represent the fire’s destruction. Old grocery bags were torn, then I burned the edges and used the charcoal to write the letters to form the words. I owned the old quilt, and it was easy to rip apart, this quilt represents the communities, the people woven together, building over again…to rise above, and help one another grow upward again. The quilt shows new growth in the ash pile. The base is acrylic paint and the charcoal was used all over this piece, throughout all the layers."
