This whole auction was Maira Kalman's idea. We asked her to speak at a fundraiser for our library last year, and she couldn't because she was away. But she offered us a piece of art if we ever wanted to do an auction. So here's the auction. And whoa, we learned that the art Maira gave us retails for $1400 at The Julie Saul Gallery! Maira Kalman: Generous, menschy genius! This beautiful piece appeared on the cover of The Elements of Style. Kalman is of course known for her brilliant children's books as well as her work for the New York Times and her covers for the New Yorker. In 2010, The Institute of Contemporary Art organized a retrospective of her work; it traveled to The Jewish Museum (New York, NY), the Skirball Cultural Center (Los Angeles, CA), the Contemporary Jewish Museum (San Francisco, CA), and the University of Pennsylvania. This piece is called "Well, Susan," it's an IRIS print, Edition ap2/36, and it's 17 x 13 and 3/8 inches (43.18 x 33.97 cm). Thank you, Julie Saul Gallery, too!
