NANA
From the original book of Peter Pan it is said, that since the Darling family was poor, owing to the amount of milk the children drank, that their nurse was a prim Newfoundland dog, called Nana, who had belonged to no one in particular until the Darlings engaged her. Our cuddly Nana is also engaging even though she resembles more of a Sheepdog like the one from the recent Broadway revival. She first was reshaped from a standing bear to a dog on all fours by detaching and reattaching the arms and legs. With a little back leg padding to simulate “haunches”, the basic bear was fitted with additional shaping foam and a pink taffeta tongue, complete with an encased wire, to keep it curled. The entire body was covered in muslin and then faux fur, cut from pattern pieces, was added on top of that, sewn together and applied to the body. The nose originally formed out of polymer “clay”, was covered in thermoplastic which was heated and formed and covered again with black spandex and stitched to the head along with two black button eyes. Of course she sports a proper Victorian servant’s cap in white organza with blue ribbon trim and around her neck is a red satin collar bearing her nametag. The belly has a Velcro opening to enable the bear to be signed and for the signature to be viewed. The perfect rival for Mary Poppins.
