Item Description
Original Dale Chihuly Blown Glass Bowl
"I was always looking at all these 300 different color rods that make up our palette. They come from Europe, mostly from Germany. I think it was in 1981 that I woke up one morning and said, 'I’m going to use all 300 colors in as many possible variations and combinations as I can.' I began making a series of pieces with one color inside and one color outside, and I discovered a way to put opaque white “clouds” between the two layers to clarify the colors, to keep the colors separate. " –Dale Chihuly, 1992
When glass objects reach the scale of Chihuly’s Macchia series, a new identity is achieved. Glass no longer has to pretend to be unassuming, undemanding and fragile, even though it continues to play on ephemerality. In the Macchia, the strength of the glass is suggested with references to geological formations. The colors in the Macchia are related to the colors of stones. Seen under bright light they look like nature caught on fire, nature in molten flux, nature in the process of being created. –Robert Hobbs, “Chihuly’s Macchia,” Dale Chihuly: objets de verre, Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Palais du Louvre, 1986
Dale Chihuly also painted and autographed a Kate Spade, "lilia" handbag and included two books of his work and a set of 12 notecards.
"The Drawings have to do with releasing energy. Somebody once said that people become artists because they have a certain kind of energy to release, and that rang true to me. It's not the kind of energy you can work off in the weight room. It must have an outlet--it must be released to someone. That's really why I draw."
