Item Description

Sister Joan Steans, professor emerita who taught at New Jersey City University for three decades before retiring in 1998, was born in Hackensack, she has devoted her life to art, teaching, and helping others.

Sister Steans' painted landscapes depict places she has visited throughout the United States and Europe. Some of her favorite locations include Leicestershire, Yorkshire, and Cornwall, England; Isle-of-Skye, Scotland; Seven Meadows Farm in Gardiner, New York; various Jersey City neighborhoods and New Jersey shore towns, and the Newark Bay as viewed from Bayonne.

Steans' work has been exhibited in several one-woman shows at the University, including her first in 1973 and her most recent, "Sister Joan Steans Retrospective: A Journey of Peace," in 1997. Her work has also been exhibited in group shows at Manhattanville College and the Trenton State House as well as in juried shows of the Arts Development Council and the New Jersey Water Color Society.
