Item Description
This is "Newport from the Bay" -- a hand-colored, woodcut engraving. It's from "Picturesque America" -- a pair of picture books popular in the mid 19th Century, regarded by at least one historian as helping Americans to celebrate one, continental nation following the trauma of the Civil War. "Picturesque America" featured the work of many notable illustrators, including the creator of this piece, engraver J.G. Smithwick Donated by Stephan and Julia Brigidi of the Bristol Workshops in Photography, Bristol, RI, the mint-condition print itself measures 5" x 10". Matted in museum board, overall dimensions are 14" x 16" in its gold wood frame.
