Item Description

My Guardian Angel, a Sydney Taylor Awards Honor Book, is set in Troyes, France, in the year 1096, the year
of the first Crusade. It tells the story of funny, feisty 12-year
old Elvina, the granddaughter of the great rabbi known as Rashi.
Elvina is different from the other girls of her time in that she knows how to
read and write. She draws strength from this, as well as from her
Guardian Angel, to whom she speaks constantly. The novel opens with
the arrival of the Crusaders in Troyes, on their way to the Holy
Land. The Crusaders have been known to batter down doors and burn
Jewish homes, and kill Jews, all in the name of religion. On a cold
Sabbath afternoon while Elvina is alone in the house, three Crusaders
pound at her door. One of them is wounded. Elvina has only a moment
to make a difficult choice that could put her family and her entire
community in grave danger. Can her Guardian Angel guide her and keep
her safe?

Readers don't have to be Jewish to appreciate this beautifully written
story and its wonderfully realized characters and fascinating
setting. . . . Lovely." --Kirkus Reviews, starred review

Elvina's Mirror tells the tale of a Rashi's granddaughter, a young
girl who defies her community to help a friend in need.
In this sequel to My Guardian Angel, Sylvie Weil continues the story
of Elvina, the feisty, generous, now-14-year-old granddaughter of Rashi.
One evening, a mysterious family arrives in Troyes. The townspeople
shun the family, but Elvina befriends 11-year-old Columba and learns
the family comes from Germany. Strange and scary things start
happening in the Jewish neighborhood of Troyes. A mirror is stolen
from the house of Elvina's friends. Elvina's grandfather tells her not to get involved; but Elvina likes Columba so
much she wants to help her. She soon gets drawn into a more difficult
situation than she expected....

Elvina's story brings the often-ignored world of Medieval European
Jewry to life for young readers.
