Item Description

Dorjee Naljorma is a rich and vivid painted depiction of the dakini Vajrayogini. Thangkas such as this are used by Tibetan Buddhist practitioners for deepening their relationship with a meditational deity. Their artfulness makes them a thing of beauty to behold in a variety of settings.

This thangka is another example of the religious artistry that comes to us from Norbulingka Institute near Dharamsala. The Institute is dedicated to preserving Tibetan heritage, not only for their own community-in-exile , but also for the whole of humankind.

To create a painted thangka canvas is stretched over a wooden frame using a cord that allows tension to be adjusted after the cloth has been sealed with a moist mixture of chalk and gesso. The surface is polished with a smooth stone or glass, until the underlying texture of the canvas is no longer apparent. The design for the painting is then drawn directly onto the taut surface using charcoal or pencil. Once the initial sketch is complete, the lines are redrawn in ink and the details are refined. Colours are applied, beginning with the distant planes of the painting and completed with gold embellishments. When the painting is finally complete, it is mounted in silk brocade.

Norbulingka Institute is dedicated to handing down tradition and restoring standards of living by providing training, education and employment for Tibetans. It supports an environment in which Tibetan community and family values can flourish. It reconciles the traditional with the modern creatively and respectfully, and seeks to create an international awareness of Tibetan values and their expression in art and literature.

All proceeds from the sale of the Dorjee Naljorma thangka will be returned to Norbulingka Institute.
