Item Description
This Historical Shakyamuni Buddha thangka rendered in rich silks and fine embroidery comes from Norbulingka Institute in the Kangra Valley near Dharamsala. Director Kalsang Yeshi says "it has become Tibetans' special responsibility, especially those of us in exile, to work to preserve our heritage, not only for ourselves, but also for the whole of humankind. This is why we established the Norbulingka Institute."
The creation of fabric thangkas goes back many centuries in Tibet. The appliqué artists at Norbulingka bring their finest skills to these silk thangkas, working with hundreds of hand-cut pieces of fabric and brocade and taking many months to complete each one. In each case they start with a stencil of the desired image, drawing a full-size image on paper and perforating the lines with a needle. This stencil is then placed over the cloth that will form the background and dabbed with a cloth laden with powdered white chalk. The chalk renders the drawing visible. The individual figures assembled from silk brocade are stitched onto this background and outlined with silk-wrapped strands of Mongolian horse tail. The completed image is mounted on a plain white cotton backing before finally being framed in a brocade border.
Norbulingka Institute is dedicated to handing down tradition and restoring standards of living by providing training, education and employment for Tibetans. It supports an environment in which Tibetan community and family values can flourish. It reconciles the traditional with the modern creatively and respectfully, and seeks to create an international awareness of Tibetan values and their expression in art and literature.
