Simple, fluid shapes and crystalline glazes characterize the ceramics by John Denis Ransmeier. The soft curves of his pieces echo the sometimes surprising beauty in our natural surroundings. His techniques include a combination of wheel-thrown, slab and coil construction that are fired in a wood kiln. The blending of these methods unites to form graceful, elegant sculptures. While working with many mediums as a sculptor in college, Ransmeier discovered he preferred clay.
"I am continually reinventing my line of work to keep the pieces fresh and alive. This gives me more freedom to grow",he explains. "In my work I used to try to maintain control over surface and glaze. Now I am enjoying letting randomness into my work. I have gravitated toward looser ways of making things and glazes which I couldn't control if I tried."
Ransmeier received his BFA degree from Alfred University (NY) after studying at the Kansas City Art Institute (MO) and attended graduate school at Louisiana State University. He has exhibited at the Lowe Art Museum (FL) and Ringling Museum (FL).
