Item Description

Two Black and White Bowls with Box

Porcelain and oak

2-1/2"H x 4-1/2"diameter (each bowl),5"H x 10-1/4"W x 5"D (box)

Through a synthesis of traditionally decorative forms and visual ideas found in nature, Leah Leitson creates utilitarian vessels that transcend their function and integrate themselves into the patterns of our daily lives. Leitson works with porcelain that she throws, alters and assembles, focusing on the formal relationship of proportion, shape, color and surface within each piece.

"My forms are predominately inspired by the eighteenth and nineteenth century decorative arts periods",notes Leitson."I am particularly influenced by utilitarian silver tableware and Sevres porcelain. I also am inspired by plant forms in nature and enjoy integrating these influences so they become one".

She received her BFA degree from New York State College of Ceramics, Alfred University, and her MFA degree in ceramics from Louisiana State University. She received an Emerging Artist Grant from the Asheville Arts Council. Her work is in the collections of the Schein-Joseph International Museum of Ceramic Arts (NY), Archie Bray Foundation (MT), Gallery of Art & Design, North Carolina State University and Louisiana State University Art Museum. It also has been exhibited at The Ohio Craft Museum and Hickory Museum of Art (NC).
