Item Description

Set of Three Bowls

Slab and coil built white earthenware

2"H x 11"diameter (largest)

The narrative sculptures by ceramist Jennifer Kincaid range from "journey"bowls to figurative platters. Exploring time, age and basic human emotions, she uses simplified figures, forms and words in clay to articulate her thoughts.

"I seek to express, with complex layers of texture and color, that which is universally meaningful",  notes Kincaid."Words are often part of my work, incorporated during the process, as thoughts become images and images conjure words. Handbuilding, often with slabs, I engage the clay in the several stages from wet to leather hard. I stomp, throw, roll, scratch, smooth, beat, draw, write and paint the surface with colored slips. I layer washes, engobes and sometimes glazes in the second firing."

Kincaid received her BFA from Queens University and received a Regional artist Grant from the North Carolina Arts Council. Her work has been exhibited at Gaston County Museum (NC), Aiken County Historical Museum (SC), and Kentucky Craft Museum. It is in the collections of Green Hill Center of North Carolina Art, Museum of Art and History (NC), and First Charter Bank and Trust (NC).
