Item Description
This is the 2008 paperback edition of the award-winning biography Fighting Bob La Follette: The Righteous Reformer. One of the leading lights in the original progressive movement, La Follette represented Wisconsin first in the House, then as governor, and finally for nineteen years in the U.S. Senate. A tireless fighter against corruption, La Follette left enduring legacies: the direct election of senators, women's suffrage, environmental protections, and worker compensation laws. He led the opposition to US entry into World War I, and made a remarkable third party bid for the presidency in 1924, garnering 17% of the popular vote.
Item Special Note
According to the New York Times, "Unger's voice remains subdue an objective throughout the book, but La Follette...leap[s] from its pages." Howard Zinn observed, "In our time of mediocre and timid political leadership, it is good to have a book that reminds us of the unique political courage of Bob La Follette."
