Item Description

The source of Tibet's four rivers – Brahmaputra, Indus, Sutlej, and Karnali – converge in Western Tibet's Mount Kailash region, an important crossroads where many Himalayan religions and histories intersect. Tenzin Phuntsog's Four Rivers offers a non-narrative, meditative cinematic experience that casts an unbiased and unobtrusive eye on the Tibetan Plateau.

Inspired by a 1940s pilgrimage guide book written by Swami Prama Vananda about this region, Four Rivers was shot by proxy after Phuntsog was denied an entry visa into Tibet. Camera and Unit Director Anders Uhl was sent to Tibet with strict visual guidelines, resulting in a beautiful film that captures the sacredness, brutality, and beauty of these landscapes, while also bearing witness to the increasing number of development projects being put in place in the region.

You will receive two tickets to the American premiere of Four Rivers on Sunday, December 12, 2010 at 3:00pm at the Rubin Museum of Art, 150 West 17 Street in New York City.

The Rubin Museum of Art (RMA) in is home to a comprehensive collection of art from the Himalayas and surrounding regions. The artistic heritage of this vast and culturally varied area of the world remains relatively obscure. Through changing exhibitions and an array of engaging public programs, RMA offers opportunities to explore the artistic legacy of the Himalayan region and to appreciate its place in the context of world cultures.
