Item Description
Take a second look: is it the rolling waves of the ocean, the windblown craters of the moon, or a Hawaiian volcano? No matter how you see it, this photograph takes your breath away.
Ph'hoe'hoe Sunrise was taken at Volcano National Park on the island of Hawaii during my recent visit in February 2007. Kilauea Volcano is one of the most active volcanic sites in the world, and several lava flows are moving toward the ocean. It took a three hour hike across 2 1/2 miles of newly hardened lava to reach this site at sunrise. Note the steam plumes center left, where the lava is entering the ocean, and the skylight center-right, where a lava tube is running underground.
Photo is 12x18, matted to 18x24.
