Item Description
This is a 1908 Vose & Sons upright piano 53" tall that with elaborate case carvings. Artist Cheryl Stein used sheet music to decopauge the piano for this unique and distinctive look.
The piano is in fair condition and while it was made playable for the purposes of 'OC Can You Play?' is only suitable for light recreational playing. The Pacific Symphony decal can be taken off. You can learn more about Vose & Sons pianos here.
Cheryl Stein, artist statement:
The year of the piano and The Joy of Music; what grand themes to tie in with Pacific Symphony’s Beethoven Series... Since the OC Can You Play event is a fundraiser for the Symphony it seemed fitting to bring the two together in concert in my design for this 1908 Vose and Sons Piano. How appropriate it is that its classic design parallels the classical heritage of Beethoven and the Symphony. I brought the old and the new together using actual pages of vintage sheet music, sketches of composers done in traditional art forms of collage and decopauge. I also used newer techniques of computer image montage, and mixed media; and all with a bit of humor. The right panel tells of the joys of love from a “Fellow Needs a Girl” to “Wedding March”, with a dose of post-wedding reality thrown in. The left panel explores various themes of music through time. The front of the piano celebrates Beethoven with sheet music of his compositons, and images of him in various artforms. The top of the piano continues to celebrate Beethoven with a “Warhol” inspired approach and various pages of the
vintage sheet music. The lower panel celebrates joy of music through the ages with images and sketches of composers, singers and muscians, some vintage prose on singing and of course, more vintage sheet music. The design was continued on the bench with a tapestry padded seat, composers and vintage sheet music applied to the legs and body and topped off with a beaded fringe. Throughout the design you will see whimsical touches as reminders of gone-by eras, and some elements just for fun. Through my design, the piano expresses the joy that music can give as well as it’s rich heritage.
As a former Art Director and owner of a graphic design firm, I have been blessed to be able use my artistic talents in my professional and personal life. My passions over time have include pottery, graphic design, packaging, mosaic artwork, drawing, mixed-media projects, digital slide shows, event photo-documentation, photo collage, hand-designed home furnishings and fashion accessories, stock photo development, hand photo tinting, and photo shoots of families, kids, couples and pets. My current passion is photographing the world-at-large, including my semi-willing two boys, Colin and Hayden. Then seeing how long it takes to fill up my terabyte hard drive with the images.
