Additional Information: “La Joie de la Thora Suite 2” translates as ”The Joy of Torah.” The artist was inspired by the Jewish Simkhat Torah, an annual celebration of the Torah expressed in joyous dance and song. Rather than expressing his images as traditional filled-in figures, Azoulay relies solely on subtle changes in the curvature of his line to create vivid illusions of motion and depth. The strength, movement, and grace of the figures conveyed in this piece are perfect examples of the artist’s signature style. Certain parts of the work seem to appear and disappear with the angle viewed. Rarely does an artist achieve this amount of movement and perception of depth with only the deftly manipulated line.
About the Artist:
Born in Casablanca, Morocco in 1949, Azoulay’s parents settled in Paris when he was 10, and at 13 he was already sketching and selling his drawings on the streets and planning his career as an artist. When he was 14, he left home and hitchhiked across Europe and the Middle East. His desire to see and be part of the life, history and beauty of the world took him from Copenhagen to Rome, from Lisbon to Jerusalem. The world was his university, and he became fluent in five languages. People were his main subject with their joys and pains and ways of life. He eventually moved to California —and today lives near horses, a familiar subject in many of his etchings. He was, in fact, the official artist of the Kentucky Derby in 1983.
He has exhibited internationally, including in Rome, Copenhagen, Monte Carlo, Paris and Tel-Aviv, and his work has been collected by kings, presidents and dignitaries alike. Guillaume Azoulay has twice been accepted to the permanent archives of the Louvre in Paris; at 29, he was the youngest artist to have ever achieved that prestigious honor...
