Item Description

Attention collectors, lovers of music and Jazz Fest!  This is a fantastic slice of New Orleans and music history, both in image and word.

Includes:

  • Jazz Scrapbook by Bill Russell and Some Highly Musical Friends - Collector William Russell’s passion for jazz is the underlying rhythm throughout Jazz Scrapbook. The book offers cameo portraits of Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong, Bunk Johnson, Mahalia Jackson, Baby Dodds, Natty Dominque, and Fess Manetta—a roll call of early jazz greats, all born in New Orleans. Nine essays and 66 rare period photographs give an intimate, backstage view of the jazz world documented by the William Russell Jazz Collection at The Historic New Orleans Collection.
  • The legendary Herman Leonard's pictorial, Jazz (Hardcover) - Since the 1950s, Herman Leonard's photographs of jazz musicians have been crucial in shaping the image of the music and the world in which it was created. Leonard's friendships with jazz greats such as Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis gave him rare access to the innovators who made modern jazz and the places in which they made it. Leonard took his camera into the smoky clubs and after-hours sessions, to backstage parties and musicians' apartments, to build an incomparable visual record of one of the twentieth century's most significant art forms. His luminous images of Charlie Parker, Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday, and many others, both in performance and "off duty," are at once supreme examples of the photographer's art and a unique record of a musical revolution. For this definitive collection of his work, Leonard has retrieved scores of previously unseen photographs, published here for the first time, alongside his most famous and widely recognized images. Accompanied by an essay exploring the stories behind the pictures, and an interview with Leonard revealing his techniques, Jazz captures and preserves the glory days of the music that has been called "the sound of surprise."
  • FOUR (4) Limited Edition Jazz Fest cachets!  ONE Irma Thomas cachet from 1992 featuring textured rich purple foil and luminescence silver foil for the Jazz Fest logo.  The postal collection features two 45 records and quarter notes.  ONE Pete Fountain cachet from 1993 featuring teal foil print with geometric luminance and a wonderful pin and ink collage of Fountain by Dick Bobnick and a Cole Porter stamp.  The postmark features hands on a clarinet.  ONE Doc Cheatham cachet from 1996 featuring hot pink foil printing, a trumpet cancellation, and a Louis Armstrong stamp along with a detailed pen and ink collage.  Numbered 2372 of 2500.  ONE Sidney Bechet cachet from 1997 featuring blue foil print, a clarinet cancellation and a pen and ink collage of Sidney Bechet. Number 2281 of 2500.

About the cachets:  The U.S. Post Office issues specialized commemoratives for important cultural contributions that are that are uniquely American.  In 1989, the U.S. Post Office issued its first Jazz Fest commemorative "cachet" featuring Professor Longhair, one of New Orleans formative characters known for his piano stylings throughout the world.  Every year since, a new cachet has been produced, each featuring a New Orleans original.

The cachets are highly sought after, and the value as a collectable and framed piece for any home or office increases every year.  Details are also unique each year on the cachet reflecting both New Orleans and the featured musician from the postmark to the stamp.  Cachets after 1994 are numbered.  Cachets are preserved through a cardboard insert to keep them rigid, and a clear cover to keep out moisture.
