Item Description
This charming watercolor was purchased by the donor from a street artist in Rangoon, Myanmar, while traveling in Southeast Asia's friendliest country in the fall of 2010. Street artists like to focus on the bright colors and the typical scenes of their surroundings.
The watercolor captures the brilliance of the Shwedagon Pagoda, the most sacred Buddhist monument located in the heart of the capital city of Rangoon. There is some controversy as to the date of construction of the pagoda. Archeologists believe it was built between the 6th and 10th centuries.
Gold plates are attached to the brick structure by rivets. Burmese royalty and the Burmese people have donated gold to preserve it since the 15th century; a practice that continues today.
The colors used in the water color are primarily gold/yellow, brown, blues, white and a bit of green. Image measures 10.5" x 13.5"; framed 16.75" x 14 in a black wooden frame with a brown insert around the image.
