Item Description

Cameron Watson began his professional career in New York studying acting with the legendary Herbert Berghof at HB Studio.  He soon landed the starring role in the original production of Horton Foote’s “The Widow Claire” at Circle in the Square, replacing Matthew Broderick, which led to a lifelong relationship and collaboration with Mr. Foote.

Watson wrote and directed the feature film, “Our Very Own,” starring Allison Janney, Jason Ritter, Cheryl Hines, Mary Badham, Autumn Reeser, Faith Prince, Beth Grant and Keith Carradine, and it was picked up and released by Miramax.  Ms. Janney received an Independent Spirit Award nomination for her work in the film.

Watson recently directed the highly praised revival of “I Never Sang for My Father” starring Philip Baker Hall at The New American Theatre and Hal Linden and Christina Pickles in “On Golden Pond” at The Colony Theatre.  He directed the east coast premiere of Dodie Smith’s “I Capture the Castle” at the Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey.  The Wall Street Journal declared it among the “Best Theatre of 2010.”  Watson directed “Grace & Glorie” starring Beth Grant at The Colony Theatre in Los Angeles which was nominated for four 2010 LA Ovation Awards and won for Best Lead Actress (Beth Grant) and Best Set Design.  He also directed the box office record-breaking production of Joanna McClelland Glass’ “Trying” at The Colony Theatre starring Alan Mandell.  This production was nominated for eight LA Ovation Awards including Best Play and Best Director and won for Best Lead Actor.  The Los Angeles Drama Critic’s Circle nominated it for three awards including Best Production and it won for Best Actor.  Watson received the Backstage West Garland Award for Best Director.  Also at The Colony was Watson’s highly popular production of Willy Russell’s newly updated “Educating Rita.”  He directed Horton Foote’s “The Habitation of Dragons” at the Actor’s Co-Op in Hollywood which won the Ovation Award for Best Supporting Actor.  At the El Portal Theatre in Los Angeles was Watson’s American premiere of “I Capture the Castle” which received six Ovation Award nominations.  He directed a unique one-woman called “Rolling with Laughter” at the El Portal, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and Her Majesty’s Theatre in London’s West End.

Watson’s lengthy acting career includes leading roles at the Pasadena Playhouse, Laguna Playhouse, Portland Center Stage, Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey and on many LA stages.  His numerous appearances in television and film over the years range from “Cheers” and “Dynasty” to “Bones,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” and “Six Feet Under.”
