Item Description
Although mostly self-taught, aviation artist Domenic DeNardo received formal art training at the Rhode Island School of Design and also studied engineering at the University of Rhode Island. As an illustrator, his art has been published in periodicals including Aviation Week & Space Technology, Business & Commercial Aviation, Commuter Air, Time, Wall Street Journal, etc. His paintings have been selected for exhibition and awards by the EAA, CAE SimuFlite/Flying Magazine “Horizons of Flight," New England Air Museum, the Providence Art Club, and the American Society of Aviation Artists.
This work depicts Lieutenant George Sutcliffe of Rhode Island, in the air over France just days after D-Day. His group of four had been jumped by twenty BF 109s and he found himself out of ammo with his plane badly shot-up after a lengthy, impossible-odds dogfight (you can see his wingman bailing out in the lower-left corner.)
Despite all that happened, Sutcliffe managed to climb into the clouds - winning a respectful salute from the German pilot on his right. He made it home to fight another day, survived the war, and personally autographed this print, along with the artist.
Item Special Note
This unframed lithograph is signed by the artist and pilot George Sutcliffe from Greenville, RI. It is numbered 303/950 and measures 21"H x 26"W. Certificate of Authenticity included.
