Item Description
As an artist, my materials and how I use them, is the essence of my art. I am always looking for new ways to apply the paint. The process of painting is what interests me – the steps I go through to build up the paint and break it down. When I work, I think about the qualities of the painted surface such as: dark against light, smooth versus rough, transparent or opaque, and bold versus subtle. To enhance the texture of the surface and add more dimension to the painting, I use a technique called collage. My collages utilize a combination of handmade papers and scraps from my own paintings on paper to create a totally new image.
When presented with the challenge of painting a violin with the theme of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, I tried to take my usual painting approach of combining painting with collage. I divided the violin surface into four distinct color fields that literally represented Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter. When you look at the violin, you will see the subtle or not-so-subtle references to the seasons as you move from one season to the next. I playfully made the violin strings out of handmade gold and black paper, which I repeated on the sides of the violin.
Even though I work in an abstract style, I encourage the viewer to look at the painted violin and discover the “Four Seasons” through color, shape and collage!
