Upon listening to Mozart’s Eine kleine Nachtmusik, an image immediately came to my mind. Yet still, I sat with the unpainted violin for weeks listening to Mozart in search of maybe another way to transform the piece. Turned out my first idea was the perfect choice. I am a self-taught Abstract Artist. Art is about slowing down time and thinking. Music does the same thing. Each allows one to be “in the present moment”.
Jackson Pollock is one of my favorite artists. He lived from 1912-1956 and was known as the pioneer of Abstract Expressionism. The intensity of his paintings reminded me of the passion of Mozart’s compositions. Although Mozart was a prolific and influential composer of the Classical Era, I felt the art and music of these two men would compliment one another. As it turns out, Mozart’s birthday, January 27th was the day before Pollock’s, albeit some two hundred years earlier. I wonder how the two would have influenced each other had they lived during the same time period.
The violin’s white background served as the blank canvas. The black lines represent the lines drawn by the bow as it slides across the strings. Black brings sophistication to the piece acknowledging the complexity of the music. The splashes of red paint were thrown from a pallet knife, as Pollock did in much of his work. This was done at the end and finished the violin as the piece of music came to its close.
