Item Description

A passion for jazz and the Dave Brubeck Quartet were my inspiration in painting this violin.  Paul Desmond, alto saxophonist for the quartet, wrote “Take Five” in 1959, a period during which the distinctive 5/4 time signature was considered avant garde, a departure from the conventional 4/4 meter.  The violin’s design, painted with acrylics, denotes a connection to the music’s title and innovative tempo with repetitions of the number five and circular forms and colors in the saxophone and timepieces.  Members of the Dave Brubeck Quartet on the violin’s opposite side were sketched individually from a 1966 video of the quartet’s performance in Germany and arranged into an original composition.  Although their images are characteristically traditional for that era, they are contrasted with “Take Five” sheet music symbols which embody the experimental techniques that have become classic.
