This painting instills the core thrill of being 100 feet underwater at remote Cocos Island. The viewer feels the energy, and is transported to this World Heritage Site to see a detailed hammerhead (Sphyrna lewini) being meticulously cleaned by barberfish. The background reveals a school of sharks passing overhead. The surrounding substrate is unquestionably Cocos Island.
The artist, Carlos Hiller began his career painting landscapes of the Amazon and the Central American rain forest. Delighted with the tropical environment, he decided to settle in Costa Rica. Arguably the best known marine artist in Latin America, Hiller has an impressive list of private collectors a well as mural commissions in the Middle East, Europe and around Costa Rica.
A strong supporter of Cocos Island conservation and protection, Carlos Hiller recently was an artist in residence, and was given a unique opportunity to live and create on Cocos Island.
“Passage to the Future” a special painting that symbolizes the passage we are trying to make from an uncertain future to a protected one for these beautiful hammerheads, the ambassadors of “Shark Island”.
