For festivals and wedding rituals, the Maithili women of Janakpur traditionally paint lively designs on the mud walls of their homes. This painting, featured on Nepali handmade lokta (daphne) paper, blends tradition and art as a vehicle of empowerment for Maithili women through The Janakpur Women's Development Center. They are the first NGO in Nepal to use the tradition of painting as a means of empowerment and provide training in literacy, management, leadership, gender awareness and basic business skills.
