NEWSIES
2012
Extra! Extra! Read all about it! Newsies, Disney’s hit movie musical from 1992, is coming to Broadway. In 1899, New York City newsboys were required to buy their papers before selling them for a small profit. Publishers Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst raise the cost of their newspapers but these newsboys are not going to take the price hike without a fight. Jack organizes the boys to strike against the big-shot news moguls and into the fight of their lives. Decked out in his traditional newsboy outfit, our Jack Kelly bear wears a blue cotton-blend collared shirt under his black-and-white striped wool vest. His trousers are made from light-brown, pinstriped wool. Black faux-leather shoes keep his feet protected from the cobblestone streets of New York and his signature newsboy cap, made from brown hounds-tooth wool, completes the outfit. Jack carries an off-white muslin bag filled with five newspapers he’s ready and eager to sell. Each paper has a front page taken from Joseph Pulitzer’s New York World newspaper with real headlines from 1899.
