Item Description

If your idea of the Terminal Tower is limited to the vast lobbies through which you reach the Rapid or Gateway attractions, this will round out the vision of its originators, O. P. and M. J. Van Sweringen, and give you a delicious sense of what $179 million could buy a couple of bachelor railroad barons and developers in 1928, when their skyscraper opened as the second-tallest building in the world ($2.5 billion today). Historically and architecturally significant spaces on your visit will include the Greenbrier Suite, the Vans’s private residence; the 36th floor, formerly the executive offices from which they controlled their $3 billion business empire; the Observation Deck, with 30-mile views on a clear day; the Portico entrance, with its elaborate trim and original murals; the English Oak Room, formerly an elegant restaurant for train passengers and other prominent Clevelanders; the MK Ferguson Building Lobby, once the public lobby of Cleveland’s Main Post Office, and still featuring its original 1934 art deco writing desks, relief sculptures, and murals; and the Silver Grille, the former Higbee department store restaurant, now a meticulously restored art deco event space. Light refreshments will be provided courtesy of Tower Deli.
