Joe Johnson’s recent color photography continues his explorations of depopulated human environments. In the series Local Weather, he focuses on Midwestern landscapes—tract houses, strip malls, construction sites, roads and farms vacated due to near white-out conditions.
Shot using color sheet film in existing light with a 4x5 field camera, the unmanipulated color and minute details are absorbed from long exposure, delivering uncanny effects.
About The Artist
Joe Johnson, assistant professor of photography at the University of Missouri in Columbia, received his MFA in 2004 from Massachusetts College of Art in Boston, where he studied with Abelardo Morell and Nicholas Nixon.
Local Weather has been exhibited at Alibi Fine Art, Chicago; Gallery Kayafas, Boston; and a 2011 group show at Galerie Huit in Arles, France. This series has also been recently reviewed in Art in America.
