Item Description
The Cross of Muiredach (Murdock), the finest High Cross in all of Ireland, was created in 923 A.D., made of sandstone and named after the abbot of a now-ruined monastery settlement which lies north of Dublin. The Irish monks used high crosses to celebrate the triumph of Christianity over paganism in Ireland and as a tool for teaching the illiterate masses through simple stone carvings. The Irish High Cross is itself a kind of holy text: stonecarvers depicted images from the Old and New Testaments, from the Lives of the Saints, and in some cases from pagan mythology, which cover the crosses from top to bottom and side to side. The stories were chosen for their symbolic meaning (especially the Crucifixion and Christ's Passion) or significance in foreshadowing events associated with Christ. The actual Cross stands 18 feet tall. This replica is 19" x 9". Made in the USA of Portland Stone. For outdoor/indoor use -- recommend bringing in for winter. Hanger on back.
