Tesserae: fused glass, dichroic glass, stringers, brass wire

" 'Glasswing' is a fused mosaic with a custom-made fused Glasswing butterfly.  A fused mosaic is a glass-on-glass mosaic, where powdered frit (glass) is applied instead of grout, then fired in a kiln.  A photo of a nasturtium by David Abdullah inspired the background.  The Glasswing (Greta oto) butterfly has orange borders around its transparent wings.  The tissue between the veins of its wings looks like clear glass, as it lacks the colored scales found in other butterflies.  Despite its delicate appearance, it is a sturdy butterfly, and is toxic to predators.  Their natural habitats are the rain forests and tropical areas of Central and South America."

I have been a stained glass artist since the early 1980’s, specializing in Tiffany-style lamps.  I branched into mosaics about 6 years ago to take advantage of all my scrap glass.  I have recently been incorporating fusing techniques into my mosaics.  I enjoy working in glass because of the wide choice of color palette, glass types and textures.  Magic happens when light is transmitted through or reflected off a glass art piece.  I also enjoy the challenge of working in 3-D, and I add intricacy, flow and bright colors to my designs.  Some of my award winning work has appeared in juried shows in California, Washington, Nevada, Massachusetts, and North Carolina.
