Slightly fragrant white flowers in spring occur in attractive drooping clusters before plants leaf out. Small, sweet fruit matures to red and ripens purple-black in summer. Summer foliage turns to orange red in fall. Essential to habitat gardens where berries draw all sorts of wildlife. Prefers woodlands or low lying wetlands with adequate moisture. Plant as specimen against dark background. This is sometimes considered a deciduous shrub when smaller, but when it reaches tree-like proportions prune up base to reveal trunk. Amelanchier can handle full sun to part shade and is considered a moderate to fast growth reaching 6 to 20' tall with age, and nearly as wide.
