Prominent builder and hotelier, George O. Stacy, commissioned the designs of Phillips & Holloran when he started the Stacy House in 1897.  Stacy was widely known for his many accomplishments in building the tourist trade in East Gloucester through many summer “cottages” on Eastern Point, four of the most celebrated hotels on the North Shore, including the 300-room Colonial Arms (burned in 1908), and later Stacy Boulevard and the famous Fisherman’s Statue.  The Stacy House, listed in the National Register of Historic Places, was distinct because even though it employed the popular Colonial Revival style, the delicacy necessitated by deed restrictions made this one of the highest refinements of style in the city.  Because of the color, shape, and the fact that the house was a wedding gift to George Stacy’s bride, Jane Parker, it became known as the Wedding Cake House.   Unfortunately, the couple never lived there.  Mrs. Stacy refused to live on the isolated Bass Rocks, which was, and sometimes still is, virtually empty in the winter. 

Jerome Remmick, of the New York music publishing company, rented the house as a summer home until Stacy’s death in 1928, at which time the house was sold to Catherine Sterns, who renamed her home “Rockmont”.  Karl and Jane Muller, also prominent in the tourist and development business in Gloucester, purchased Rockmont in 1946.  First opened that summer as a guesthouse, this property became the nucleus of many different businesses catering to our summer visitors.  From soda shops to restaurants, hotels to condominiums, from marinas to whale watching, all the children and grandchildren have participated.  The motel, built in the 1960’s by sons Gerald and Geoffrey, was operated for 30 years by Gerald and his wife Geraldine and has become a favorite vacation spot for thousands of families.  The contributions of generations of family and staff have enhanced the accommodations to satisfy today’s discriminating guests, while preserving the unique character of the hotel and that wonderful sweeping, panoramic view of the ocean. 

Over the past several years, many changes have been made to the Bass Rocks Ocean Inn.  While always keeping in mind that our guests are truly looking to get away from it all, life is not always so easy.  So we have incorporated some of the modern conveniences into our beachy lifestyle.  Gone are the days when your phone call was announced from the bullhorn over the lobby door (remember that?) and if you weren't in by 10 P.M., you stayed out for the night.  We do still believe that a live person answering the phone beats voice prompts and we can not live without the internet.  Some days you just want to enjoy doing nothing with a good book or a good movie.  And some days, you want to pack in as many activities as you can.  We want to help you make lasting memories of your time here in Gloucester and return home with a desire to return again soon.
