Artist Statement:

Each year in Erie County, New York 826 women are diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 138 succumbing to this disease.  Without question this is a disease that predominantly afflicts women.  But the 7 men who are diagnosed and 2 from that group that die from this disease should not be forgotten. The ARTbreast I created recognizes all those who will face this illness and memorializes all those who we will miss but will not forget.

Each pink pennant represents each woman who will be diagnosed with breast cancer in the year ahead.  Each red pennant represents each woman who will be lost to this malignancy.  The Blue pennant represents each man who will be diagnosed or die from the disease.  The random placement of the colors reflects the randomness to which the disease attacks us.

In a society so focused on body image, breast cancer wreaks havoc on the minds of women whose image is forcibly and sexually connected to a small part of their self that is so essential to life and the continuity of the human race.  For men the diagnosis of breast cancer is emasculating since as we all know, it is a “women’s disease”.

In contradiction of the media assault on our sensibilities, the foundation upon which the pennants are attached is a paper mache base made from the AANR naturist publication “The Bulletin”.  The reverse side of this work of art is a compliment to those who transcend the body image issue and have found a way to escape the shack holds that prevent us from welcoming and accepting others regardless of their clothing, body shape, and yes, even breasts.

To the fortunate individual who acquires this work of art I encourage you to take it home with an open mind and explore the ability to shed the media driven perceptions.
