Item Description
Driftwood Mermaid, folk art mixed-media sculpture, constructed of found objects found along the Delaware Bay by local artist Jody Swope. Item Special Note
Jody Swope is a mixed media artist, well known for her distinctive style of Folk Art and "Mini World" Constructions. Her artwork has been exhibited in museums and galleries throughout the Philadelphia and South Jersey areas, winning numerous awards. She currently lectures and teaches several art classes for adults in Cape May County.
Jody's work reflects her love of being with nature; she has collected treasures from the sea since childhood. "My family used to bring me back shells from their vacations. I would create enormous kaleidoscopic patterns with the shells on our living room floor and even my dog learned to step around them!" Jody integrates driftwood, shells, glass, metal and other recycled objects into original and one-of-a-kind folk art and sea inspired hand-crafted home furnishings. In 2005, Jody and her husband moved to their present home on the Delaware Bay, fulfilling her lifelong dream of living by the sea and doing her artwork full time. "My spirit and creativity are continually renewed with a walk along the beach, a beautiful sunset, falling to sleep to the sound of waves and waking to the seagull's laughter."
