Item Description

Whether you are young or old, learn how to paint and draw with art lessons from Chico Art School and Gallery.

Students learn the basics of drawing and painting, with an emphasis on fun. The first two weeks of the month are focused on drawing and the later weeks on painting. Students work with various mediums, including charcoal, watercolor, tempera, colored pencils and watercolor pencils. More advanced students can work in acrylics, pastel, oil and use of collage. Form, perspective, shading, cartooning, master artist biographies and painting methods are discussed during class.

Whether creating in pastel, oil, acrylic or watercolor, the emphasis is always on the process of expression and not the final piece. All levels of instruction are offered from beginners to advanced. Fun and relaxation are always foremost.  Enrollment is limited to a small group allowing each student ample time for individual guidance.

Having been raised with encouraging parents, Janet’s artistic talent was allowed to grow after starting art instruction at age seven. She was taught by oil painter, Betty Collins, in the Los Angeles area, with weekly lessons until high school. Academic art classes began at the college level while attending high school and ended with a degree in art from Chico State University. With an emphasis in printmaking and graphic design, teachers such as Janet Turner, Marion Epting and Paul Feldhaus were great influences. Most of her work is created “en plein air”, which means on location, outdoors. At no other time have Janet’s career choices become more rewarding than with the opening of Chico Art School & Gallery in 2009. Her goal is to share the rewards of art being an integral part of your life- for fun, relaxation and expression. “I hope that my students realize they can do more now than they thought possible. And I hope to eliminate fear from the creative experience.”

Once a week classes for children are offered during the summer on Wednesdays or Thursdays from 1:00-2:30pm and can be started at any time, upon availability. A Saturday class from 10:00-11:30am is also offered. Class size is limited, allowing individual attention.

Current adult classes are on Tuesdays from 1:00-3:30pm, and Thursday nights from 6:00-8:30pm.
