There are “tough reservations” and “really tough reservations”… then there’s Rao’s!
Located for many decades in Northern Manhattan’s East Harlem neighborhood, this Italian restaurant is essentially private and essentially a “meal of a lifetime,” and now through the generosity of its owners, a dinner for four on the house is available to the highest bidder.
This small eatery, with six booths and six tables, serves a dazzling array of financiers, athletes, celebs, and the quietly-ultra-high-net-worth a fare of basic but always-perfect Italian food. You won’t find molecular gastronomy here…but you will find delectable and forever-memorable cold appetizers, hot appetizers, 12 pastas and 12 sauces (you MUST get four meatballs with your pasta choices!!), veal, pork, steak, fish, and chicken.
Unless you’re one of the lucky few who “own” a table at Rao’s or have a friend who does, you can only get in by winning a reservation and dinner on the house at auction. Dinner for two rarely goes for less than $1,200.00 at auction. This package includes dinner for four.
Dinner usually runs 2-3 hours. We typically arrive at 7:30 and leave around 11. Rao’s is only open Monday through Friday for dinner.

When: if you’re the bid winner, you’ll get a call from Rao’s when a table opens up and you’ll have to take that slot or wait until the next one opens up.
