Item Description
Enjoy this original hand-written shape-poem - that is, a poem written in a non-linear fashion - by Jake Marmer.
This mode of representation offers multiple entry points - and endless ways of reading and improvising over the text. The poem is called "Concept Score #31" and is inspired by the tradition of "shiviti" (hand-written kabbalistic incantations), as well contemporary experiments with concrete poetry along the lines of e.e. cummings, Guillaume Apollinaire, and most crucially, Hank Lazer. It is also a musical invocation and is part of larger collection of "Concept Scores", a set of music-inspired poem-scores Jake is currently working on.
The image of the scanned version of the poem was originally published by the Acoustic Levitation magazine.
Jake Marmer was a participant in the Asylum International Artist Retreat, a program of FJC's Six Points Fellowship for Emerging Jewish Artists. Currently a doctoral candidate at the CUNY Graduate Center, in 2008-2009 he was a Dorot Fellow in Jerusalem. He frequently contributes to the Forward and Tablet Magazine, and has lectured & performed at Adelphi University, Stern College, Touro College, Mechon Hadar, Bowery Poetry Club, Joe's Pub, Vision Festival, Limmud UK, among numerous other venues. Recently, he has co-hosted North America’s first Jewish Poetry retreat at the KlezKanada Festival.
Originally from Ukrainian, much of his work reflects a degree of nomadism, misplacement, collision of linguistic and cultural paradigms.
