Item Description

"Young Lady," Alabaster Bird Sculpture on Ryholite Base, by stone sculptor Alan Gepfert

Bird sculpture measures 2 1/4" high, 3 1/4" long, 1 3/4" wide.  Base measures 3 1/2" x 2 1/4".

About the artist, Alan Gepfert:  My stone sculptures are of animals, abstract forms, and people including children.  I’m especially drawn by flowing surfaces, by striking geometrical shapes, and by images that show a lot of personality and inner character - whether in humans or animals

The carving is in relief and in the round using all kinds of stone - from tough granite, to intermediate marble (some from a roadside vein in Lenox), to soft soapstone.  My hand tools are hammer and chisels, files, abrasive stones, and nearly a dozen grits of silicon-based sandpapers used wet.  I also use some power tools.  Every piece is finished with highly buffed carnauba wax.

Reliefs start with a fairly detailed sketch on a flat slab; three-dimensional works start with a rough partial sketch.  In either case work quickly demolishes the sketch so actual creation emerges and evolves stage by state.  In that process, inspiration plus mental images are tapped to bring out and meld all surfaces and produce a flowing integrated whole to accomplish the creative goal.

Generously donated by the artist, Alan Gepfert, New London, NH
