Inside Court Theatre: An Evening with the Artistic Director, Charles Newell

Tuesday, November 18, 2014, 6 p.m.

Hosted by Swati and Bobby, MBA’81, Mehta at Court Theatre

Cocktails and light food will be served.

Join the Mehtas for a spectacular evening at Court Theatre. Enjoy this unique opportunity to hear a conversation with artistic director Charles Newell, during which he will give attendees the inside view of the choices he and the Court Theatre team make along the way to their renowned productions. Attendees will also see and learn about costume and set design and take a backstage tour.

Court Theatre’s recent one-man adaptation of An Iliad made it onto several best plays lists for 2013 and earned actor Timothy Edward Kane a Jeff Award for best solo performance. The Chicago Sun-Times critic Hedy Weiss said, “This galvanic Court Theatre production remains one of the most astonishing evocations of the insanity of war you will ever experience.” This is just one of the many award-winning performances produced at Court Theatre.

Established in 1955, Court Theatre is the professional theater on campus at UChicago. It aims to create innovative productions of classic plays that are thought-provoking, character-driven, and thematically enduring. Court Theatre reexamines, reenvisions, and renews classic texts that pose enduring and provocative questions that define the human experience. Underlying this mission is the theater’s vision of becoming the Center for Classic Theatre, where the arts community looks for leadership in the creation, production, and study of classic theatrical works.

Charles Newell was recently awarded the 2013 Stage Directors and Choreographers Foundation Zelda Fichandler Award, “which recognizes an outstanding director or choreographer who is transforming the regional arts landscape through singular creativity and artistry in theatre.” Newell has been the artistic director of Court Theatre since 1994; there he has directed over 40 productions. He made his Chicago directorial debut in 1993 with The Triumph of Love, which won the Joseph Jefferson Award for Best Production. Charlie’s productions of Man of La Mancha and Caroline, or Change have also won Best Production Jeff Awards. Other directorial highlights at Court include The Misanthrope, Tartuffe, Proof, Angels in America, An Iliad, Porgy and Bess, Three Tall Women, Titus Andronicus, Arcadia, Uncle Vanya, Raisin, The Glass Menagerie, Travesties, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, The Invention of Love, and Hamlet. Newell was the recipient of the 1992 Theatre Communications Group Alan Schneider Director Award and has been nominated for 16 Joseph Jefferson Director Awards, winning four times. In 2012 Newell was honored by the League of Chicago Theatres with its Artistic Achievement Award.
