Hosted by Dawn and Ben, ’86, MBA’94, Shapiro in their home

Compelled by the alarmingly high rates of teen pregnancy and a sense that all parents struggle with conversations with their teens about reproductive health, Melissa Gilliam started to look outside medicine to improve youth health education and change behavior. In her search, Gilliam found English professor Patrick Jagoda, whose research focuses on new media and gaming; they cofounded Game Changer Chicago (GCC) as part of UChicago’s Center for Interdisciplinary Inquiry and Innovation in Sexual and Reproductive Health. GCC relies on youth-directed, problem-based, collaborative learning opportunities to explore health and social issues. GCC’s The Source, an alternate reality game, highlights the possibilities of developing 21st century literacies that can then be used to tackle complex social problems. In the process of playing The Source this past summer, youth in Chicago honed their skills in media literacy, critical inquiry, storytelling, and game design while learning about sustainability, health, and cyberbullying.

Melissa Gilliam is a professor of obstetrics/gynecology and pediatrics, the chief of family planning, and the associate dean for diversity in the Division of the Biological Sciences at UChicago. An expert in pediatric and adolescent gynecology, Gilliam helps children, teens, and women age 25 and younger who have complex gynecologic problems or need routine care. She has expertise in providing preventive care and providing contraception to adolescents with other medical problems. Gilliam focuses on providing a youth-friendly atmosphere for girls and young women, working closely with other specialists across the University. An active researcher, Gilliam’s research focuses on contraception, family planning, youth development, and sexually transmitted infections. Specifically, she focuses on contraceptive use among teens and women who are at risk for unintended pregnancy. She is the director of the Center for Interdisciplinary Inquiry and Innovation in Sexual and Reproductive Health.

Patrick Jagoda is an assistant professor of English at UChicago and a coeditor of Critical Inquiry. Professor Jagoda specializes in new media studies, digital game theory and design, and 20th-century American literature. He’s been published in such journals as Critical Inquiryboundary 2Social Text, Post45, and Neo-Victorian Studies; he’s also edited volumes such as Cyberspace and National Security. Jagoda is the cofounder of Game Changer Chicago. He has also worked on several projects related to digital storytelling, transmedia or multiplatform game design, and new media learning. Along with projects related to the Game Changer Chicago Design Lab, Jagoda has directed a number of transmedia games. Lab families only.
