This collection was inspired by an iconic photograph depicting the original usage of the building back in the 1920’s. Uncovered during the renovation project, the image sparked my love for history and my affection for downtown Olympia. Upon researching the history of the buildings with local historian Ed Echtle, this concept grew into the display of advertisements from the various eras of the Washington Center site.

Ira Coyne has painted a legacy for himself in the Pacific Northwest landscape. Modern sign painter by trade, his designs and colorful lettering are ubiquitous in the Puget Sound. From the landmark murals he's put up in the heart of downtown Seattle to the many artisanal windows he's designed in his hometown of Olympia, his folk art influenced flourishes are visual reminders to appreciate art wherever the location. Since his part in the independent movie "Sign Painters", a hit documentary on the rich history and revival of the craft by directors Faythe Levine and Sam Macon, he has traveled across America to paint store fronts and specialty projects alike. The temporary installation of art panels outside the Washington Center was the talk of the town throughout December 2013. Passersby thoroughly enjoyed the artwork depicting historical advertising by local muralist Ira Coyne. These works of art provided a colorful and interesting temporary façade to the near-complete construction site and will continue to provide enhancements to The Center. The City has graciously surplused the art panels to The Center to be used in fundraising.
