Item Description
For Guiding Eyes graduate Omar Rivera and his guide dog, Salty, one harrowing event epitomizes this. It has been fourteen years since the team’s escape from Tower One on September 11th, and their remarkable story was featured on National Geographic in a special about 9/11 entitled, “Where Were You?”.
Salty’s unmistakable insistence that they flee prompted Omar to make his way out of the building. The team painstakingly made their way down the building’s narrow staircase, and Omar remembers taking Salty’s harness off at one point, telling him to go because the stairway was narrow and nearly impossible for them to navigate together. Salty began to descend, listening to Omar’s command, but quickly returned, as if to say, “I am with you…no matter what.”
"Trust is the most important thing in a relationship with a guide dog. The dogs give everything they have – just for love. Salty worked with me for ten years, and will remain in my heart forever. Guiding Eyes prepares such beautiful dogs; maybe one day there will be another Salty for someone else, but I hope not for the same purpose.”
Please accept our heartfelt gratitude for your kindness and generosity.
