The Butchart Gardens is an internationally renowned 55-acre (22 hectare) display garden located near Victoria, British Columbia. Created in 1904 by Jennie Butchart, and still privately owned and operated by her great-granddaughter, The Gardens has been designated a National Historic Site of Canada and welcomes over one million visitors a year.
In spring, The Gardens is a show of unparalleled beauty with hundreds of thousands of bulbs in bloom, joined by a host of flowering trees and shrubs. Summer at The Gardens is breathtaking, and floral splendor greets you at every turn. From June 15th through September 15th, enjoy Night Illuminations, a beautiful contrast of light and shadow that gives a magical glow to the shrubs, trees and flowers, while every night the Concert Lawn hosts a variety of performing artists. Enjoy world-class Fireworks every Saturday night in July and August. Autumn offers garden visitors a palette of beautiful oranges and reds, and the Japanese Garden is truly magnificent. Winter comes alive in temperate Victoria and at The Butchart Gardens; skaters enjoy gliding around the open-air ice rink. Tens of thousands of colored lights adorn The Gardens as The Magic of Christmas sparkles from December 1st through January 6th. In mid-January, Spring Prelude’s indoor garden beckons, bursting with bloom, while outdoor gardens stir.
Rick Los is the Director of Horticulture at The Butchart Gardens, a position he has held for 18 years. Rick developed a love for plants while he was very young, spending time in his father’s greenhouses. He spent his life working in many aspects of horticulture, and formally trained as a landscape designer before beginning his career at The Butchart Gardens. Rick truly feels blessed to be a part of The Butchart Gardens and credits his staff with being the real reason behind this garden masterpiece.
